Social Studies
The Roslyn Middle School Social Studies curriculum is designed to help students understand the world around them by exploring history, government, culture, and society. Through the study of world history in sixth grade and American history in seventh and eighth grades, students gain insight into how past events, ideas, and institutions continue to shape our lives today. The program emphasizes critical thinking, discussion, and civic awareness, encouraging students to become thoughtful, informed participants in a democratic and interconnected world. Guided by the belief that studying history helps us better understand ourselves and others, the curriculum lays a strong foundation for future learning and responsible citizenship.
No country can possibly move ahead, no free society can possibly be sustained, unless it has an educated citizenry whose qualities of mind and heart permit it to take part in the complicated and increasingly sophisticated decisions that pour not only upon the President and upon the Congress, but upon all the citizens who exercise the ultimate power." - John F. Kennedy
A Message from Social Studies Chair Kristy Faulkner
By studying history and the various social science disciplines, students gain an understanding of our government, social institutions and cultural heritage and how they inform modern society. Throughout the program, students acquire the skills to become critical thinkers and active citizens in a democratic society and an increasingly interdependent world.
Grade 6 offers a survey of World History and grades 7-8 explore American History. All grades follow a state mandated curriculum. Our Civic Leadership and Debate elective is offered in grade 8, which culminates in our NYSED Middle School Capstone project which leads to the Seal of Civic Readiness upon graduation.
It is our sincere hope that every student will benefit from this course of study and be better prepared to meet the challenges of college life and the workplace. Most importantly, we hope they will build on what they learned here and continually reflect on what it means to be an active participant in civics and their community.
